Being the owner of 3 businesses isn't easy. Primarily by day I am the owner of a NH marketing company that consumes most of my daylight and evening hours. In the back-drop I am always the owner of a small but successful karaoke entertainment company. This however doesn't really require anymore of my time than a simple phone call or two before any schedule events with a client. Yet even further in the backdrop I also am part owner of a small network of completely automated online free classifieds websites.
I work from home and get into the field regularly and am find that keeping daily interaction between my clients and myself allows me to streamline my workflow on down days. I am passionate about my work and what I do. I am also a full time dad. My children are usually a big part of my day and managing them even can be unforgiving.
It's funny I often as a professional in advertising come across many resources, both automated an not that help me leverage my time. Now I don't usually take Saturdays off but I did happen to try last weekend. My step-father had a need for some work done in his house due to the cable company coming out this past Wednesday for an upgrade to HD for the beautiful new TV he just got for himself.
So a few hours after I had purchased the lumber and done some modest fabrication, sanding and trim work, I was finally ready to stain it and throw a clear coat on it. The stain even in the cold absorbed relatively quickly and I was impressed with the outcome. However, when I came ready to put the poly on the cold air wasn't exactly working with me and I was losing daylight. I had taken the day-off but I hadn't counted on this being an obstacle and wanted to spend the evening with my family. Bringing the new wall unit in with the smell of freshly laid stain wasn't an option with a 23-month old in the house. I also didn't want to spend hours standing there with the hair dryer to help keep the temperature of the wood up against the cold garage air.
By a shear stroke of luck I came up with an ingenius and simple time leveraging robot that saved me a bunch of time, as you can see from the podcast which is below.
It was really simple to make it work in this mannner and it solved my problem. I was able to spend the rest of the evening with my family and I was able to check the robot every ten mintutes to reset the air flow calibration to produce the finish I wanted on the furniture piece. Plus overall I saved about 12 hours of drying time and was able to hang wall unit the next day before the cable company arrived.
Sure enough I enjoyed the experience and was pleased that my simple resourcefullness was able to work for my furniture item adventure as well as my day-to-day marketing activities.

When A Big Fish Becomes A Little One | Applying The Aim High Marketing Concept.
I'm not talking about adventure sport fishing or spinning yarns around the lodge about the big "fish" that got away.
But one advantage in marketing is that when you are aiming for a target using the aim high concept. Quite often you end up smelling like roses after the dust has settled.
Whether it's vanity or the thoughts of reaching financial freedom that motivate some of us to set such high goals for ourselves. It shouldn' t be such a suprise when those sometimes far-reached goals often come crashing down before us. Sometimes the aim high method does have it's rewards and this is such an example.
Recently, our marketing company was approached by client x, who needed some online marketing and some visual branding online. Client x cames to us with a very large advertising budget not really knowing what to expect after leaving telemarketing behind due to the new regulations on telemarketing.
We responded with a seriously robust and yet cost effective and time delivered proposal, that would have left any savvy new media seeking alternative to advertising advocate foaming at the mouth for such a campaign.
Still managing to give them exactly what they wanted at 10 % the cost of the local competition wasn't completely whet they wanted. Where the several weeks of negotiating and time that went into creating the proposal completely wasted?
Not really. In the end they decided to go with one part of the initial campaign that we had proposed, which was a contracted 6 month service for online marketing. It wasn't the 12 month monster we thought we hand landed initially. But it was a nice size fish all the same.
The great thing is that we we are able to deliver to the client in a timely manner exactly what they asked for and succeeded in our reputation. The other advantage in regards to the aim high method is that we aimed high and still hit our target in obtaining the new customer.
In business you have to remember that a fish is a fish and in most cases a little fish can mature into a big fish.
When it comes to marketing you have to ask yourself,"Would you rather be know as company that just always landed big fish?", or " Would you rather be known as a company that helped little fish become big fish along the way".
This is much like the controversy over quality versus quantity. But most of us have learned already, while quanity in any form is nice to have, most of us would also agree that quality business is what drives a lasting impression with the majority of customers both on and off-line.
